Hello. We are students from Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. WE have been working with some Hmong elders on a project for about two-three months now and we've really enjoyed it, we've been making a book mark in the Hmong style of cross-stitching. The guys, Toua Lor, 18 and Cher Lee, 18 are both seniors here at Harding High, Nunmoula Vang, 16 Dua Song Vang, 16, and Pa Jee Lee, 16 are all juniors here at Harding High. Our bookmark symbolizes starts, snow, and flowers, that sparkles because it's so bright. The colors being used are: bright neon green, neon orange, hot red, and dark bright blue. The colors remind us of the different seasons; Summer, Spring, Fall, and Winter. We see all the seasons in our bookmark. The colors of the thread used are so beautiful that it makes the bookmark seem bright and happy. The color we used first was hot red. We used this color first, because it stood out from the rest of the color. We made the border line with red. We worked from the outside in. Started with the border then to the main pattern in the center.

As seen in our first bookmark, three are hearts, these hearts bring love and joy to us. Also, with the bright colors chosen and the hearts, when we look at our bookmark, it makes our day seem happier. There are also other shapes too, like squares and triangle (we usually stick with the squares because they're more easier to cross-stitch with). Like the other two, they're both traditional patterns of the Hmong culture. We used a 1 1/2 inch needle that wasn't so sharp. The eye of the needle was long and sort of wide. The work on the bookmarks were pretty interesting to us. We caught on pretty fast and enjoyed the time spent on this project. We know that we are capable of making another bookmark on our own.

We've all learned from the Hmong elders that sewing goes way back in our Hmong history. We talked about sewing starting at early ages, and that you'll have a more better experience. I enjoyed listening to their history of their life. We talked about the Hmong New Year, and what they do on their spare time. The only difference is that the elders watch us and correct us on our mistakes. They helped us untie the knots that we've made accidently and silly mistakes we beginners did. We are all very glad that we've had the chance to experience our culture and we hope to relive these moments that we had with the elders. We learned from the elders that we are the next generation and they hope for us to teach the children younger than us how to sew and keep our tradition alive forever. We had conversations about their families and how they lived back in Laos. It was very interesting to us that they have experienced so much, more then we imagined! We admire them very much for giving their time to help us sew but we really hoped that they came more often.

"Hmong Textile Arts" means the Hmong tradition to us. We think that it is our job to learn what our ancestors have left for us to carry on. Our ancestors have taught so many others throughout their lives and we believe that our generation is more modern so we should also be capable of teaching the younger children. It should be easier for us to communicate with the society around us today then it was for the elders because we speak English more fluently than they did.
We learned that if you wanted to make a Hmong cross-stitching piece of art than you should put a lot of time into it. Your mind should also be completely focused on the work and keep your eyes open. With these tips, the result on your work should please you because you put a lot of time and effort into it.
