How we made the bookmark

This bookmark was made by Iriya Thao. The colors of this bookmark are bright green, bright orange, and blue. This design is important to our culture because it shows what kind of people we are. It also represents our background and our identity.

I learned it from the elder by looking at one of their sewing. First, I started with green because that's the color that the elder mostly used to start with. You have to know where to start sewing the "X" and their steps to make the design. I learned it by looking at one of the elder's sewing. The kind of needle I used is a one-inch long needle.

The interactions we had with the elders

The elder taught us how to make a lot of other designs that we don't really know oL She taught us how to make crisscross stitching. She also talked about her life when she started to learn how to sew. She said that for Hmong, they started to sew when they're young especially for the girl. We think that it9s great having the elder to come and teach us how to sew in school.

What I learned from "Hmong Textile Arts"

Hmong Textile Arts taught us how to sew the designs of the bookmark and other sewing that we're going to be learning. The elder taught us about the history of Hmong Textile Arts and that the mother will teach their daughter how to sew, so they can pass their sewing technique to their children children's.
